Since it was established in 1986, the Computer Engineering Department has been a major provider of graduates to key employers in the kingdom, including Saudi Aramco, SABIC, Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, STC, Mobily, Zain, Saudi Electric Company, CISCO, Advanced Electronics Company, Microsoft.

The mission of the Computer Engineering Degree Program at KFUPM is to develop and train the human intellect needed for meeting the continued technological advances in the discipline of Computer Engineering and IT-related areas. This includes graduating well-trained computer engineers to participate in the industrial development which is taking place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.​
